As last year and in previous years, the following is my compilation and curation of summer book lists, one of my favorite activities of the year.
As always, I’ve aimed for an eclectic range of lists, from media outlets (including USA TODAY, my professional alma mater), universities, libraries, and other sources containing worthy books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
Continuing kudos to Emily Temple of Literary Hub, for her heroic work compiling and curating The Ultimate Summer 2026 Reading List, published June 15. She also makes the intriguing comment that “I must note that the summer book lists are relatively thin on the ground (or possibly just late) this year.”
Perusing the lists, and the fortunate books that were chosen, confirms something I’ve long considered when compiling these posts. Summer reading has multiple aims: pure enjoyment, escapism, discovery, professional development, and also our aims and goals of becoming better human beings.
