40 Years of Peter Drucker

Forty years ago, in May 1986, my life changed profoundly. That is when I began my serious study of the life and work of Peter Drucker, initially as a graduate student at The Catholic University of America School of Library and Information Science.

Since those days, I interviewed Drucker in person several times before his death at 95 in 2005. I’ve written two Drucker-related books, and many posts and articles (including for USA TODAY, where I worked from 1987-2008; and Leader to Leader, where I’ve been managing editor since 2011). There have been numerous in-person and online presentations since my first book was published in 2009.

I’ve told the origin story in multiple ways, and rather than reinvent the wheel, I’m honoring the 40 year milestone in this brief post by including some of the anecdotes about those origins and my subsequent Drucker-related work, and the amazing people I’ve met along the way:

Since the 35 year mark five years ago, I began a Drucker-focused blog on psychologytoday.com, The Peter Drucker Files. As noted above, I’ve contributed to The Drucker Institute Drucker +, and also to The Drucker School of Management/Claremont Graduate University site. Forty years is a long time, but my enthusiasm remains undiminished!
